An open letter to European Heads of State and Government

We appeal to our compatriots and all European and world citizens to pressingly call upon the Heads of State and Government throughout Europe: Ukrainian children abducted and deported to Russia must be saved!

According to the Ukrainian authorities, several hundred thousand Ukrainian children, including nearly 20,000 unaccompanied minors identified by Kyiv to date (May 2023), are currently being held on Russian territory, with no guarantees or external controls on their living conditions. Some of them are reportedly deliberately separated from their parents by the Russian authorities.

Moreover, according to a UN survey, several thousand unaccompanied minors, orphaned or not, are at risk of being adopted by Russian families (Russia has not ratified the 1993 Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Inter-Country Adoption). In addition, Vladimir Putin has simplified the granting of Russian citizenship to these children by decrees of 25 May and 11 July 2022, thus facilitating adoption procedures for Russian families. Everything indicates that such forced adoption procedures have already taken place and are currently going on.

We must say NO to forced adoption and russification of kidnapped children!

Some of these children are already "in the process of re-education" – that is, russification! ─, as boasted by the Russian first television channel. The brainwashing of children is, in fact, part of the plan to eradicate the Ukrainian nation outlined by Timofei Sergeitsev, a close associate of Putin (RIA Novosti, April 2022), whose negationist remarks are taken up daily by the Russian media.

We cannot leave these thousands of forcibly deported and isolated Ukrainian children in the Kremlin’s hands. The forcible transfer of minors is a heinous and morally and politically unacceptable crime. According to the 1948 International Convention on Genocide (Article II), this is strictly speaking a genocidal act!

We urge the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, but also the Heads of State and Government of the whole of Europe to intervene unanimously and publicly by demanding from Russia the release of the children and all deported Ukrainian civilians.

We ask them to call on the relevant international organisations, including UNICEF and the International Red Cross, to intercede as soon as possible with the Government of the Russian Federation in order to visit these children, examine their living conditions and organise their repatriation to Ukraine.

Save the Ukrainian children deported to Russia! #BringBackUkrainianKids

Implement Poppy's Law: Equal Rights for Cats as for Other Animals

We, Oldham Cats Rescue (charity no 1058621) are deeply concerned about the current ineffectual laws and regulations regarding cats in the United Kingdom. As individuals and as an organisation dedicated to the welfare of animals, particularly cats, we are appalled by the discrepancies in the legal treatment of cats compared to other animals.Poppy’s storyIn 2019, at Oldham Cats Rescue, we welcomed a beautiful tabby & white female cat aged 9 years young …..This was Poppy! Poppy, a sweet and gentle girl, became a resident at the Rescue, after attempting to find her the perfect forever home with no luck. We are a NO-KILL shelter, so in the event that we exhaust all avenues such as posting a particular cat on social media, videos, word of mouth and so forth, at that point we discuss residency at the Rescue. Our precious Poppy enjoyed her residency at the Rescue; she fitted into the family straight away. She would greet everyone on arrival, and everyone doted upon her, volunteers and family alike! On Thursday 21st March 2024, Poppy was discovered deceased within very close proximity of our Rescue. Our precious girl was killed purposely, in a cold and cruel way. Poppy was decapitated and her head to this day is still missing. No animal should have to endure what our sweet Poppy was subjected to. We are heartbroken beyond belief - traumatised, angry and shocked by such a horrific act of animal cruelty.Police responseThe police response was hesitant and inadequate. After reporting the incident, we received a message from the police to say that they would not be investigating. They declined to visit, look for evidence, talk to neighbours or review CCTV footage. After a complaint to the Chief Constable, local police contacted us after a week and said that they had been unaware of the crime (despite it being reported to the police and publicised in local media) until that day. They explained that the initial response had been made by a central team, without involving the local force. We appreciate that police resources are limited and that, unfortunately, not all crimes can be solved. But this must be balanced against the importance of reassuring the local community that a serious effort will be made, within these constraints. This would not only provide solace to the public, but would also boost confidence in, and respect for, the police in the locality. As the founder of the modern police force, Sir Robert Peel, said - "The police are the public and the public are the police".Response from the CommunityWe have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, sympathy and practical help from people and businesses in the local area, as a result of Poppy’s cruel murder. Donations, visits, offers of equipment – it has been an amazing display of kindness. This only serves to emphasise that there is a real demand from the general public for genuine, focussed and co-ordinated action to rectify this social evil. The authorities need to match this public response with action. These crimes are on the increase. An RSPCA survey in 2023 highlighted a 23% increase in cat cruelty cases, year on year. The South London Animal Investigation Network logged 1,039 such cases in the period since 2015. And local incidents in the Greater Manchester area are reported to be on the rise in a number of nearby towns – at least six recorded incidents in recent weeks. It’s not even just an animal welfare issue. Allowing these incidents to continue, without effective intervention, misses the chance to identify perpetrators who obviously have serious psychological disorders and may progress to even worse crimes. Our Mission and Our Call for ActionAs a dedicated non-profit organization, founded in 1996, Oldham Cats Rescue’s mission is clear: to provide a safe haven, unwavering love, and vital care for abandoned, stray, and abused cats. All of us at Oldham Cats Rescue believe, every whisker counts. Our team of passionate volunteers and trustees work tirelessly to ensure that each cat receives the individualized attention and care they deserve. From medical treatment and rehabilitation to socialization and enrichment, we strive to address the unique needs of every feline, helping them to heal and thrive. We rehome an average of 270 cats a year. But our work extends beyond the walls of our rescue. Through proactive community outreach and education initiatives, we aim to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying and neutering and microchipping, and the plight of homeless cats. By fostering a culture of compassion and empathy, we endeavour to create a brighter future for cats in our community. As a Rescue who deeply cares about the welfare of cats, we are appalled to learn that cats are treated differently under the law compared to other animals. This is a shocking revelation considering that they are protected animals. This is not only shocking but also undermines the intrinsic value and welfare of these beloved animals. Despite being recognized as protected animals, cats continue to be subjected to inadequate legal protection. The legal status of cats under the UK Animal Welfare Act 2006 is that of protected animals. UK law generally regards companion animals such as cats as personal property so that any damage or harm to a cat is legally the same as damage to any other piece of property (Criminal Damage Act 1971).Despite being required by law from June to be microchipped, it seems that our feline friends still do not enjoy the same rights as other animals. For example, unlike dogs, there is no obligation to report cats involved in road traffic accidents. These discrepancies in treatment are unjust and require urgent attention and action. The Croydon Cat Killer case serves as a poignant reminder of society's disparate treatment of cats compared to other animals. The case of the Croydon cat killer was dropped without any significant resolution or justice for the victims involved. It’s disheartening and raises serious questions about how we value our pets' lives. Acknowledging the sentience of cats underscores the importance of treating them with compassion, respect, and understanding, recognizing that they, like us, are sentient beings deserving of consideration and care.Despite existing laws aimed at protecting cats, it's evident that they are failing to adequately safeguard our cats. Loopholes and inconsistencies in legislation often result in lenient penalties for offenders, perpetuating a cycle of impunity. The lack of enforcement and resources allocated to enforce these laws further exacerbates the problem. Without robust and comprehensive measures in place, cats remain vulnerable and in danger. Therefore, we call for the following actions: - Placing cats on the same legal footing as dogs in respect of road traffic accidents and intentional cruelty;- Making it a statutory responsibility for Police Commissioners to prioritise the investigation of crimes involving intentional killing and/or mutilation of domestic animals.- Requiring local police to attend the site of all such incidents;- Chief Constables to publish an Annual Report, highlighting such cases and the action taken;- Police Commissioners and Chief Constables to review annually the effectiveness of communication and "hand-offs" between central and local police teams;- The Animal Welfare and Police Ministers to report annually to Parliament on the effectiveness of these new measures;- This subject to be a standing item on the agenda for DEFRA’s Animal Welfare CommitteeThe Government has already intervened in this area with “Lucy’s Law” – to protect puppies and kittens. Now is the time to build on that precedent, and pass “Poppy’s Law”.In conclusion, for our beautiful Poppy, the call for equal rights for cats is not just a matter of compassion, but one of justice and fairness. Cats, as sentient beings, deserve to be recognized and protected under the law, ensuring they are afforded the same basic rights and considerations as any other member of our society. By signing this petition, you're not only advocating for the well-being of our feline companions, but you're also taking a stand for equality and empathy and justice for Poppy. Let us work together to create a world where every cat is valued, respected, and treated with the dignity they rightfully deserve.

Improve Safety and Cleanliness in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent

I am a concerned resident of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Our beloved town has become an area where many fear to tread. Retail workers and shoppers are threatened and abused daily. The once vibrant streets are now marred by human waste, making it unbearable for older people and parents who no longer feel safe in the town. The Parliament Row area is particularly affected, with anti-social behaviour becoming the norm rather than the exception. This situation is unacceptable and needs urgent attention from our local council and police force.According to a recent survey by Staffordshire Police, crime rates have increased significantly in Hanley over the past year (Staffordshire Police Crime Report 2021). This rise coincides with an increase in homelessness and drug-related activities which have been largely ignored by those responsible for maintaining law and order. Our plea is not just about cleaning up our streets physically but also restoring safety so that everyone can enjoy what Hanley has to offer without fear or discomfort. We need immediate action to address these issues - more police patrols, stricter enforcement against anti-social behaviour, support for homeless individuals instead of neglecting them, as well as regular clean-ups to maintain hygiene standards. We call on the council of Stoke-on-Trent City Council as well as Staffordshire Police Force to take immediate action towards improving conditions in Hanley. Let's restore pride in our community! Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves a safe environment free from fear or harm.

Close down the Green River Bar for allowing a wolf to be tortured inside bar

On February 29, 2024 a patron of the Green River Bar in Daniel, Wyoming brought an injured wolf pup into the bar wearing a shock collar and tape around her muzzle. This patron, Cody Roberts of Daniel, Wyoming, had just deliberately ran over the exhausted wolf pup with his snowmobile! Photos and video were taken of the terrified wolf who continued to be tormented for another five hours in the Green River Bar. She could be heard whimpering periodically when her captor Cody Roberts would turn up the shock collar. This female wolf pup (estimated by a biologist) to be 9 months old, was already suffering with grave injuries and in unimaginable pain. On top of her physical pain, it is traumatizing for a wild wolf to be brought inside a human establishment, especially by a man who first chased her with his snowmobile until she could run no longer and fell with exhaustion whereupon he ran her over with the vehicle. After he ran her over he quickly taped her mouth shut and took her to his house -- it is unknown what he did to her there. He then took her to the Green River Bar who saw that she was in grave condition and allowed her to be tortured for another five hours. No one called the authorities or aided the innocent animal in any way. After 5 hours Roberts took the terrorized wolf out back to end her life. It is unknown if he he shot her, beat her to death, or choked her. What he did do for the video camera was kiss her on the muzzle, inside the bar before killing her.The Green River Bar allowed all of this to happen on their premises and it was reported by an eyewitness at the bar that the owner or bar maid and many of Roberts relatives there made this a party atmosphere, celebrating the worst day of the young wolf's life. The healthy department, for their own reasons, should be citing this establishment as they do sell food. This bar showed no professional business sense or compassion for a living being who was suffering at the hands of a sad*stic brute.

What he did do for the video camera was kiss her on the muzzle, inside the bar before killing her.

The Green River Bar allowed all of this to happen on their premises and it was reported by an eyewitness at the bar that the owner or bar maid and many of Roberts relatives there made this a party atmosphere, celebrating the worst day of the young wolf's life.

The healthy department, for their own reasons, should be citing this establishment as they do sell food.

This bar showed no professional business sense or compassion for a living being who was suffering at the hands of a sad*stic brute.

End the Use of Police Vehicles for Mental Health Patient Transport in Scotland

This petition is born out of a deeply personal and distressing experience. The person experienced mental health crisis and reached out to the police for support. The officers, upon seeing this person's distress, contacted a psychiatric nurse. However, due to their heightened stress levels, the person was unable to communicate effectively over the phone. The decision was made to transport this person for assessment at a Psychiatric Hospital in Edinburgh. The person agreed to be transported to the hospital. Despite showing no signs of aggression or violence, the person was placed into the back of a caged police van, to the small cage without seatbelts - an experience that proved deeply traumatic.Section 297 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 confers on the police a power to take a person who appears to be mentally disordered and who appears to be in immediate need of care or treatment to a place of safety and to detain them there for a period of up to 24 hours. This incident is not isolated. It highlights how our system can inadvertently contribute towards exacerbating rather than alleviating mental distress. This practice can be dehumanizing and may potentially worsen an already fragile emotional state. We must advocate for change within our system that ensures dignity and respect are upheld during these critical moments. We urge Scottish authorities to end this practice immediately. In Report of HMICS Thematic review of policing mental health in ScotlandOctober 2023 the key findings are:Mental health is a multifaceted issue that requires an effective whole-system partnership response. There has been a significant increase in demand associated with mental health for Police Scotland and partner organisations over the last five years. End Discrimination Against fathers and social services to wear body cams

I am a father like many other fathers living in Liverpool, UK, and like many others, I find myself embroiled in a struggle that seems to be unfairly skewed against me. The issue at hand is the discrimination men face when it comes to their children. As fathers, we love our children just as much as mothers do and want regular contact with them. However, this desire often goes unnoticed by social services. The current system allows for women to use children as weapons against us. We are ignored and frequently painted in a bad light simply because we are male. This bias is not only unjust but also detrimental to the wellbeing of our children who deserve equal love and attention from both parents.Statistically speaking, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), only 13% of custodial parents in England are fathers (2018). This figure starkly highlights the systemic bias that exists within our child custody laws. This petition seeks justice for all fathers who have been marginalized by an unfair system that fails to recognize their rights as equal parents. It's time for social services to acknowledge our voices and treat us with fairness and respect. We call on lawmakers and social service agencies alike to review their policies regarding child custody cases involving fathers. We urge them not just listen but hear us out equally - because being male does not make us any less loving or capable as parents. Please sign this petition if you believe in equality of parental rights regardless of gender - because every father deserves an equal chance at raising his child! Also this is about bitter exs not letting fathers see there kids it’s so wrong!! Time and time again I get abuse and I’ve reported it a 100 times and get no were do you no how that feels to be a man if I was a woman reporting abuse I’d be locked up and the key would be thrown away!! Woman can be the perpetrators and so can the men but in my case it is actually the woman I’ve moved on and even that I get hell for that it’s so wrong!! Please sign and share this is for Everyman to have access for there kids as long as there safe to do so thank you ❤️

Reinstate Sangita Myska to her Position at LBC

As an avid listener and supporter of LBC, I am deeply saddened by the sudden and unexplained removal of Sangita Myska from the air. Sangita is a professional and thorough journalist whose insightful reporting has been a cornerstone of LBC's programming. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be easily filled, depriving listeners of her unique perspective on critical issues.Sangita's dedication to journalism is evident in her work. She consistently provides balanced coverage, ensuring that all sides are represented fairly. This commitment to journalistic integrity has earned her respect from listeners and colleagues alike. In 2019, she was recognized for her exceptional contributions to journalism with an award from the Radio Academy (source: Radio Academy Awards). It is clear that Sangita’s removal not only impacts loyal listeners but also detracts from the overall quality of journalism presented by LBC.We believe in the importance of diverse voices in media and we value Sangita's contribution towards this goal. We urge LBC to reconsider their decision and reinstate Sangita Myska immediately. Please sign this petition if you support our cause.

#CeasefireNow: Open Call for an Immediate Ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel

#CeasefireNow: Open Call for an Immediate Ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel to Prevent a Humanitarian Catastrophe and Further Loss of Innocent LivesWe have witnessed unfathomable death and destruction in the Gaza Strip and Israel. Thousands of people have been killed, injured, displaced, and nearly two hundred remain held hostage, including children and elderly. In Gaza, the UN has said that water, food, fuel, medical supplies, and even body bags, are running out due to the siege. The UN warned that people – particularly young children – will soon start dying of severe dehydration. Neighbourhoods have been destroyed and turned into complete rubble. Palestinians in search of safety have nowhere to go. Many of those who relocated from northern Gaza to the south after the relocation order by the Israeli army were reportedly bombed as they attempted to flee or once they arrived in southern Gaza. The events of the last week have led us to the precipice of a humanitarian catastrophe and the world can no longer wait to act. It is our collective responsibility. On Sunday, October 15th, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator to the Occupied Palestinian Territory appealed to all parties to the conflict, and to Member States with influence, to urgently agree to a humanitarian ceasefire.Today, we put our voices together and call on all Heads of State, the UN Security Council, and actors on the ground, to prioritize the preservation of human life above all else. During this ceasefire, we call on all parties to unconditionally:1. Facilitate the delivery of lifesaving assistance, including food, medical supplies, fuel, and the resumption of electricity and internet to Gaza, in addition to safe passage of humanitarian and medical staff 2. Free all civilian hostages, especially children and elderly3. Allow humanitarian convoys to reach UN facilities, schools, hospitals, and health facilities in northern Gaza and commit to protecting them along with the civilians and staff inside them at all times4. Rescind orders by the Government of Israel for civilians to depart northern Gaza5. Allow patients in critical condition to be medically evacuated for urgent careThe UN Security Council, the UN Secretary General and all world leaders with influence must take immediate action to ensure a ceasefire comes into effect. It remains our only option to avert further loss of civilian life and humanitarian catastrophe. Anything less will forever be a stain on our collective conscience.Civilians are not bargaining chips. Families need a chance to bury and mourn their dead. The cycle of violence against innocent civilians needs to stop.Signatories1. 11.11.112. 38 Degrees3. 50:50 NI4. ABCD Bethlehem5. #CeasefireNow: Open Call for an Immediate Ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel

#CeasefireNow: Open Call for an Immediate Ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel to Prevent a Humanitarian Catastrophe and Further Loss of Innocent Lives

We have witnessed unfathomable death and destruction in the Gaza Strip and Israel.

On Sunday, October 15th, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator to the Occupied Palestinian Territory appealed to all parties to the conflict, and to Member States with influence, to urgently agree to a humanitarian ceasefire.

Today, we put our voices together and call on all Heads of State, the UN Security Council, and actors on the ground, to prioritize the preservation of human life above all else. During this ceasefire, we call on all parties to unconditionally:

1. Facilitate the delivery of lifesaving assistance, including food, medical supplies, fuel, and the resumption of electricity and internet to Gaza, in addition to safe passage of humanitarian and medical staff

2. Free all civilian hostages, especially children and elderly

3. Allow humanitarian convoys to reach UN facilities, schools, hospitals, and health facilities in northern Gaza and commit to protecting them along with the civilians and staff inside them at all times

4. Rescind orders by the Government of Israel for civilians to depart northern Gaza

5. Allow patients in critical condition to be medically evacuated for urgent care

The UN Security Council, the UN Secretary General and all world leaders with influence must take immediate action to ensure a ceasefire comes into effect. It remains our only option to avert further loss of civilian life and humanitarian catastrophe. Anything less will forever be a stain on our collective conscience.

Civilians are not bargaining chips. Families need a chance to bury and mourn their dead. The cycle of violence against innocent civilians needs to stop.

Prevent the Closure of Aspley Library

I have fond memories of visiting Aspley Library as a child, taking great pleasure in spending quiet hours in its calming atmosphere. This library has stood for many years, serving as a valuable asset to our community in Nottingham. Now, we face the threat of losing this precious institution.Aspley Library is not just a building; it's a beacon of knowledge and culture that has nurtured countless minds over the years. Libraries are vital for communities; they provide access to books and resources that many people would not otherwise be able to afford or access (CILIP, UK's library and information association). The closure of this library would mean depriving our community members from these essential services. Moreover, libraries play an important role in promoting literacy among children and adults alike (National Literacy Trust). By closing Aspley Library, we risk increasing literacy issues within our community. We urge local authorities to reconsider their decision on closing Aspley Library. Let us preserve this cornerstone of our community for future generations who deserve the same opportunities we had growing up. Please sign this petition to show your support against the closure.

Stop the deportation of a peaceful climate activist!

My partner Marcus Decker is being threatened with deportation - because he joined a peaceful protest against the government's inaction on the climate crisis. Please help us and sign this petition calling on the Home Office to stop his deportation.Marcus and I fell in love 3 years ago. We were brought together by our joint passion for music and for protecting our planet. He became a wonderful stepfather to my two children.Marcus is a passionate singer and climate activist. We both know how urgent the climate crisis has become and do everything we can to stop it from getting worse. When Marcus turns up at a protest and starts to sing the whole mood of the crowd can change. From one moment to another, people can listen to him in sombre silence or join him in energised chants. He is an inspiring teacher and a beloved supporter of grassroots communities. He lives the most modest life possible so he can dedicate all his time and energy to helping others. But despite all our protests and the climate emergency getting worse and worse with every day, the government is still investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure. So Marcus made the decision to step up his protest. Last October, he scaled the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge together with Morgan Trowland, creating a public debate about the government's continued investment in new oil.As a result of their protest, Marcus was sentenced to 2 years and 7 months in prison. It isn't easy for Marcus in prison and it is desperately sad for my family. We miss him every day. The prison banned Marcus from speaking to the media making it even more difficult for him to speak about the reasons for his protest. But as if such a high prison sentence was not bad enough, Marcus, a German citizen, is now being threatened with deportation. This double punishment is devastating for us. If deported, he would be separated from us, his family, his home, community and adopted country. Marcus has already been separated from us for 7 months and now he might never come home again.Marcus put his own liberty and body on the line for those suffering from the climate crisis. But he is more than just an activist - anyone that knows Marcus knows he is a gentle, thoughtful and compassionate human being who would only act proportionately to the crisis we all face. This is the man that I love. A man who sang my children to sleep at night.Every day could now be the day that the dreaded letter from the Home Office arrives. Marcus will then have 20 days to appeal the deportation decision. It is not too late to stop his deportation. Chris Packham has already called for Marcus to be released. If enough people tell the Home Office that no one should ever be deported for peaceful protest, we still stand a chance. This moment will affect the rest of Marcus' life. Please help us make it a life spent together with his family and his community.- Holly, Marcus’ partner

Stop the deportation of a peaceful climate activist!

My partner Marcus Decker is being threatened with deportation - because he joined a peaceful protest against the government's inaction on the climate crisis. Please help us and sign this petition calling on the Home Office to stop his deportation.

Marcus and I fell in love 3 years ago. We were brought together by our joint passion for music and for protecting our planet. He became a wonderful stepfather to my two children.

Marcus is a passionate singer and climate activist. We both know how urgent the climate crisis has become and do everything we can to stop it from getting worse. When Marcus turns up at a protest and starts to sing the whole mood of the crowd can change. From one moment to another, people can listen to him in sombre silence or join him in energised chants. This double punishment is devastating for us. If deported, he would be separated from us, his family, his home, community and adopted country. Marcus has already been separated from us for 7 months and now he might never come home again.

Stop the Sale of Aire Street Workshops by Leeds City Council

I am a small business owner, one of over 50, who work from Aire Street Workshops. This space has not only provided me with the opportunity to build my business but also to flourish within a community of over 150 creative individuals. However, our livelihoods are under threat as Leeds City Council plans to sell these workshops without offering any help or support and without considering alternative options.Aire Street Workshops is more than just a building; it's an incubator for creativity and entrepreneurship in Leeds. The proposed sale with no viable alternatives will lead to job losses as well as seriously damaging the city's vibrant creative sector. The creative industries in Leeds contribute significantly to local economy growth and many successful growing business began their journey in Aire Street over the last 43 years. We ask that Leeds City Council halt their plans for selling Aire Street Workshops as it is an attack on the existence of small business within Leeds - a city which purports to be the ‘City of Culture’, the council have chosen to evict 50+ small independent businesses; businesses who help shape the culture of Leeds in 2024.
