Do you ever start to accumulate a bunch of food in your freezer, that you wonder why on Earth you ever bought this stuff? I do this all the time now that Aldi is here and they have so many delicious freezer foods to stock up on. A couple of weeks ago, Asian food was on special, so I picked up a package of frozen chicken wontons. They’re good air-fried or in a simple soup such as this one. The wontons cook right in the broth so you don’t have to have another pan going to heat them up.

Simple ingredients that are staples in my pantry: fresh chopped garlic (I buy this stuff by the jar full), ginger, chicken broth, and soy sauce. If you keep these items in your pantry you can whip on an easy simple soup in no time.

  • Grated ginger - I love the grated ginger that comes in a tube already made.
  • Minced fresh garlic - Chopped fresh garlic can take some time to chop so I often always use the freshly minced garlic that comes already made in a jar.
  • Lower sodium soy sauce - Use a Low Sodium or if you don’t have that on hand go for Tamari or Coconut Amino Acids
  • Chicken Broth - Miso Broth (if you live near a Trader Joe's please use this instead of Chicken broth it has better flavor)
  • Frozen Chicken dumplings or wontons - I love the ones at Trader Joe's.
  • Scallions, chopped
  • See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Tips for Wonton Soup

Wontons: This recipe uses already prepared frozen wontons if you have a recipe that you like for homemade wontons make those for this soup! I like semi-homemade hacks.

Instead of chicken broth sub miso broth! What is miso broth? Miso broth is made of niboshi (dried baby sardines), kombu (dried kelp), katsuobushi (thin shavings of dried and smoked bonito, aka skipjack tuna), or hoshi-shiitake (dried shiitake). From Wikipedia. It sounds weird, but it is delicious.

Whenever you have food you need to get rid of in your freezer just look up recipes online that require that ingredient! That is what I did for this soup. Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed (and I live alone) that I feel like I need to declutter my freezer. Instead of wasting it or throw it all out, find recipes to make with your freezer food online. Just you wait, freezer and fridge declutter will be the next latest craze! For example, right now I have way too much frozen fruit in my freezer so I’m making smoothies with it for breakfast in the morning. If you want the recipe for those, let me know in the comments below and I’ll post a few.

Glad you liked it! Soup is always good on a cool night 🙂

  2. Dana says

Just made this tonight. So easy and a warm, quick dinner for a stormy rainy night. The broth had a little tangy taste to it. Not sure if it was the broth I used or maybe too much ginger? Definitely will be making again and twerking it to my family's taste but soooo delicious!

  3. Jenna says

If I had the bag of wontons right now I would look at the serving size but unfortunately, I don't.

  4. Carol curry says

How many wontons are you allowed in a cup of soup for 3 WW points
