You can substitute them with boneless skinless chicken breasts or chicken thighs, but adjust the cooking time accordingly to ensure that they are cooked through.

SAUCE - Teriyaki sauce provides a sweet and savory glaze that coats the chicken. I opted for store-bought teriyaki sauce for convenience. Still, you can make your own simple homemade teriyaki sauce using a combination of soy sauce, sugar, ginger, garlic, rice vinegar, orange juice, and mirin. You can also try different varieties of teriyaki sauce, such as spicy or low-sodium soy sauce.
SUGAR - Brown sugar adds sweetness and depth of flavor to the teriyaki sauce. It also caramelizes when cooked, enriching the sauce's taste. White sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or coconut sugar can be used instead. Be sure to adjust the amount of sugar to your desired sweetness.
How To Make Air Fryer Teriyaki Chicken
Please check the printable recipe card below for more detailed instructions.
- Mix teriyaki sauce and brown sugar in a bowl, then coat the chicken pieces thoroughly.
- Marinate the chicken in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
- Arrange the chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Cook at 400°F for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Simmer the remaining teriyaki sauce until thickened.
- Serve the chicken garnished with sesame seeds and green onions.
Serving Suggestions
HEARTY MEAL - A scoop of steamed rice makes the perfect base, letting the teriyaki sauce truly shine.
VEGETABLES - A side of green beans or broccoli, lightly seasoned, brings freshness to your plate.
Leftovers and Storage
STORE - To store leftover Air Fryer Teriyaki Chicken, allow it to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container or ziplock bag. Store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
FREZE - For longer storage, place the cooked teriyaki chicken in an airtight container or ziplock bag and freeze it for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight before reheating.
REHEAT - To reheat the chicken, you can use the air fryer, microwave, or stovetop. If you're using the air fryer, spray the basket with cooking spray, place the chicken in the basket, and air fry at 350°Fahrenheit for about 4-5 minutes until heated through.
REHEAT MICROWAVE - If using the microwave, cover the chicken with a damp paper towel to prevent it from drying out and microwave on high for 1-2 minutes.
REHEAT STOVE TOP - You can also reheat the chicken in a skillet over medium heat until the pieces are warmed through.
Recipe Success Tips
SLICE EVENLY - For uniform cooking, slice the chicken tenders into similar-sized pieces. This will ensure that they all cook at the same rate and are tender throughout.
MARINATE - Marinating the chicken allows it to absorb the flavors of the teriyaki sauce, resulting in a more flavorful and tender dish. For best results, I recommend covering and marinating the chicken in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or overnight if possible.
GARNISH - Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped green onions over the cooked chicken just before serving to add a pop of color and extra flavor.

Notes
COOKING TIMES:
- Marinating Times are not included in the total cook time.
- I recommend marinating the chicken for 30 minutes. But you can also marinate it overnight.
- Air Fryer Times vary between different models and the sizes of the cut chicken pieces. I own a Vortex and a Ninja Air Fryer Oven. The recommended time is 10-15 minutes; in my Ninja Oven, it took 10 minutes for the chicken to be fully cooked.
- Always use a meat thermometer when handling chicken. No matter how you prepare it, the internal temperature must always be 165º Fahrenheit.
